Stalkerware is spyware that is used to track the location and activities of a device user and is often used in intimate relationships to spy on (ex-)partners. That makes stalkerware not another kind of malware but part of the complex and age-old issue of domestic abuse. It also means that the usual methods for preventing malware don't automatically apply.
In this presentation, we will explain what stalkerware is, how it works, and the role it plays in domestic abuse. We will also discuss what can be done to fight stalkerware and to support its victims and survivors and the role tech companies can play. We will also discuss the work of the Coalition Against Stalkerware, which was founded in 2019 by security companies and NGOs working in the domestic abuse space.
Those attending this presentation will learn about stalkerware and the possible role their organization can play in fighting it. They will also learn that the domestic abuse threat model is complex and is often ignored in product design.
